Leighton Stradtman of Womble Bond Dickinson works with domestic and international clients in the areas of financial institutions, banking and finance law. Whether helping large financial services companies with their unique needs or assisting emerging FinTech clients through negotiating contracts, facilitating strategic transactions and resolving disputes, Leighton has seen pretty much all of it in his more than thirty years of practicing law.

He counsels clients on complex financing transactions, having represented lenders, borrowers, issuers, underwriters and investors in a wide variety of areas across many industry sectors, including secured and unsecured credit facilities, syndicated and single-lender loans, real estate and asset-based lending, letters of credit, public finance and economic development incentives, structured finance and private placements. Representing lenders in commercial loan workouts and restructurings is a significant part of his practice. He has managed the resolution of hundreds of millions of dollars of troubled commercial loans secured by various collateral across the US and in many other countries.

Leighton advises his clients on fundamental business operating issues, like compliance and corporate matters, in addition to the more sensitive occurrences of fraud and internal investigations.

Our regional heritage and local knowledge — combined with a transatlantic outlook — generate the insights capable of unlocking more opportunities for our clients.

With locations on both sides of the Atlantic, we provide the breadth of legal experience and services to meet our clients’ needs without losing the intimacy of being connected to our different communities. These strong local and regional ties enable us to remain close to our clients and the issues they care about.

With teams located across the US and the UK, and networks and relationships around the world, we bring an international perspective and extended jurisdictional reach to a wide range of client needs — a powerful combination that presents a compelling alternative to other firms. It all adds up to hands-on, switched-on lawyers and professionals with the ability to deliver intelligent, grounded and pragmatic advice that our clients need to feel confident and succeed at home, across the Atlantic and around the world.

We work closely with clients in all areas of the financial institutions sector, including community, regional, national, and global commercial banks, private banks, thrifts, and credit unions, financial services providers such as investment banks, broker-dealers, and asset and wealth managers.

We also work with financial advisers, non-bank and non-traditional commercial and consumer lenders and intermediaries, including crowdfunding platforms, fintech companies, governmental bodies, insurers and insurance brokers, and fund managers (real estate, private equity).

Recent domestic and global developments have created a complex financial regulatory landscape. Now, more than ever, you need an international legal partner like Womble Bond Dickinson that is able to balance your commercial and regulatory needs.

As a team, we have extensive experience in structuring and negotiating a wide range of financial transactions, including bilateral and syndicated credit facilities, asset-based lending, equipment leasing and finance, and finance for real estate, acquisition, receivables, projects, trade and other structured finance. We regularly advise secured lenders and creditors on restructurings, workouts, bankruptcy filings, receivership appointments and foreclosures.

Comprehensive regulatory and compliance advice helps our regulated and non-regulated clients avoid costly enforcement action and legal disputes whenever possible. However, when needed, we have sector-knowledgeable dispute resolution and litigation teams that regularly represent banks, mortgage lenders, insurance companies and non-traditional lenders in all types of dispute resolution (including US federal and state litigation), regulatory enforcement actions, and governmental investigations.

Our financial services lawyers are experienced in lender liability claims, mortgage-related litigation, US state and federal consumer finance litigation and investigations, troubled portfolio litigation strategy and management, institutional trust and breach of fiduciary obligations, regulatory litigation and compliance, interest rate swaps and derivatives.

In the fintech space, our clients include entrepreneurs and technology pioneers. We work with businesses that are reshaping the financial marketplace by developing and implementing new software, hardware, platforms, financial eco-systems, and business strategies.
